Nutrition Labels: Reading Between the Lines - Full Program

Packaged foods are labelled so you can make good choices. Serving size and calories help you compare similar foods. We often eat more than one serving. Labels also show the nutrients in a food. Look for low amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol, and sodium. Look for high amounts of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The ingredients list orders contents from greatest to least by weight. Look for whole grains, hydrogenated oils, and added sweeteners. Some package claims are unregulated, but nutrition facts are.
