On Dec. 3, 1984, the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, leaked 40 tons of toxic gas into the town. 3500 people died almost immediately; nearly a million were seriously injured. The company paid $470 million in compensation, but CEO Warren Anderson was hustled out of the country before he could stand trial.
