On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant melted down. The core burned for 10 days; a million people worked on clean up with insufficient protection. The USSR tried to keep the meltdown a secret, but radiation levels in Sweden alerted the world. People exposed to the radiation were killed or developed crippling health problems.
