The 1940s were dominated by World War II. The horrors of the Holocaust, the siege of Stalingrad, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, and the Nuremberg trials crowded the decade. After the war, attention was focused on establishing the state of Israel and keeping Germany well under Allied control.
