St. Augustine became a pawn in an undeclared war between Spain and England, and in 1586, Sir Francis Drake led a fleet of ships to attack the town. Archaeologists and historians found evidence of St. Augustine's past and the Spaniards' encounters with aboriginal peoples. By 1608, the English established a settlement in Jamestown.
